Hello fellow Encore Hustlers

One of the attractions of gig platforms such as Uber, TaskRabbit, DoorDash and GrubHub is their ability to allow hustlers to earn cash on a casual and flexible basis.

However there is a dark side to these hustles since reliance on the platforms also puts us at the mercy of algorithms that can change without notice. Take for example this story about InstaCart and how workers are experiencing an erosion pay because of how the platforms algorithm value their assignments. When InstaCart - a platform for buying and delivery groceries for strangers - first started workers could anticipate making $16 to $20 per delivery. However as the service has become more popular, workers now report that their pay has now declined to the $7 to $9 range. This situation has deteriorated to the point where InstaCart workers have begun to strike to bring this issue to the attention of the public and to academics.

While Mr EH encourages everyone to pursue the hustle this does not mean that we should accept work when it reaches the point where the gig becomes untenable. When this happens it is time to start your own hustle with being at the mercy of an algorithm.

Cheers,

Hello fellow Encore Hustlers

Mr EH apologies for not posting for the last couple of weeks but he has been traveling on a back-to- back week of holiday in Washington DC and New York City and then a week of visiting a suppliers shop in Alabama.

There will be a couple of posts upcoming relating to some observations during the DC/NYC visit but this post is about Mr EH finding a workplace in Alabama that not only values older workers but actively encourages them to stay working.

The shop is located in a small town in rural Alabama, midway between Birmingham and Atlanta. Surprisingly enough this company, nestled in the hills near the end of the Appalachian Trail, is fabricator that manufacturers equipment for the military, aerospace, oil & gas, and medical devices.

While having an opening meeting with the company president, the topic of retaining and hiring workers in the current tight labor market came up. According to the president, when a long term employee retires decades of hard to replace experience also walks out the door. Rather than trying to recruit and train a new employee the company has taken the tact of offering retention bonuses. For example if a senior worker agrees to stay another year the reward will be a $10K bonus.

What a switch from the attitude of many companies that are clamoring to find ways to push aging workers out the door. Of course it helps that company is privately owned, with the president also being the founder. An aerospace engineer and veteran fighter pilot, he has, at age 75, no plans to retire since he still having too much fun running his company.

Hopefully this attitude of appreciating and rewarding older workers will become a model to other companies.

Cheers,
Mr. EH
Hello fellow Encore Hustlers

If you are dreaming of pursuing an encore career it takes more than wishes and daydreams to make it happen and to be successful.

Read this article from Money which has great advice on how to grow a dream into a business:

Network like crazy, not just for potential clients but for advice and as sounding board on your business plan. Your network will also be necessary to provide emotional support when you need it.

Create a budget that will provide the necessary start up costs and to bridge for lean times when the business is launching.

Be physically and mentally fit for the stress and long hours that will come with starting the venture.

If you have all three in place your chances of successful will be greatly enhanced, just like Mike Lowe, 70, who went from corporate lawyer to opening Green Hat Gin, a distillery in Washington D.C. He has a great website with lots of info on mixology and the history of distilling in D.C.
Hello fellow Encore Hustlers

Side hustles are officially a cross generational phenomena. Odd are if you don't have a side hustle then you know someone will have one.

This article, which focuses on millennial side hustlers, finds that the average side hustler makes over $1200 a month by working about 17 hours a week. Think what you could do with amount of extra cash coming in every month?

The article also has some great points to consider when you are planning your encore hustle:

Ensure it is something you enjoy

Focus on tasks that generate revenue

Build a strong social media presence

Set goals

Leverage word-of-mouth marketing

Network with other side hustlers

Cheers,

Hello fellow Encore Hustlers

Minnesota is recognizing that retaining senior workers is a key factor maintaining the state's economic vitality. Minnesota’s population is aging. People 65 and over made up about 15 percent of Minnesota’s total population in 2015. That’s expected to rise to 21% by 2030. If these workers retire and leave the workforce that gap cannot be made up with younger workers or immigrants.
Hello fellow Encore Hustlers

Last year Mr EH wrote a post about the U.S. Census Bureau hiring in advance of the 2020 census. It turned out to be one of The Encore Hustle's most popular posts.

Well, its still not too late to apply. This week the U.S. Census Bureau is holding national hiring events across the county in an effort to fill the 500,000 temporary enumerator positions for the upcoming census that starts in 161 days. The pay will vary from about $12 to $20 an hour depending on the state you live in.

Check out more about the hiring process and how to apply by checking out this link to the U.S. Census site.

Mr. EH would love to hear any feedback or comments that you might have had applying work for the 2020 census.

Cheers,

Hello fellow Encore Hustlers

Did you know that the week of October 20 - 26 was National Retirement Security Week?

Back in 2006 U.S. Senators Gordon Smith and Kent Conrad introduced a resolution to raise awareness of the importance of retirement savings and to encourage contributing toward retirement plans.

Check out this story from the Houston Chronicle about why Americans need to save more toward retirement. However the article doesn't provide much advice what to do if you are like many Americans who cannot afford to save for retirement. What's the point of having access to a 401k or an IRA if your budget has no room to fund a retirement plan. Unfortunately too many of us no cushion and we are stuck between a rock and a hard place.

The article would have been better if it suggested turning to side hustles to earn extra cash that could be earmarked for retirement savings. It also did not consider working part time in retirement to close the gap between expenses and retirement savings and Social Security benefits.

Mr EH agrees that it can be a bitter pill but it's better to face the facts and start your side hustle as soon as possible.

Cheers,
Mr EH

Hello fellow Encore Hustlers

It is a not uncommon practice for retire public service employees to return to work on a limited basis. Think of retired teachers who come back on a substitute.

However this can be a tricky situation that varies from state to state and the type of service. State pension administrators can take a dim view if is felt that pension rules are being circumvented.

Take for example this story out of North Carolina about retired police officers returning to work on short term special assignments. Apparently this is common practice for some time with the Charlotte PD. Retired officers come back to work special events such providing traffic control and security at Panther games. But when the city announced that the newly retired Chief of Police would be coming back to lead security for next year's Republican National Convention, this caught the attention of the North Carolina State Treasurer who announced that "retired means retired" and a return work violates the law.

Now that the spotlight is shining on this practice it could result in a huge financial impact on retired police officers including a potential clawback on already paid pension benefits.

While this is being played out in the courts, Mr EH can only say that be very, very careful if you are a retired public service employee considering on retiring back to work for a short term assignment. Do your homework and consult with your state pension administrators before agreeing to work.

As always, Mr EH would love to hear your feedback and comments.

Cheers,
Hello fellow Encore Hustlers

If you are reading this blog you know that the face of aging and retirement has undergone a seismic change. Gone are the days when retirement meant kicking back and relaxing after a well earned career. Today's "retiree" is more than likely pursuing full/part-employment or becoming an seniorpreneur.

In recognition of this change The Chatham (Massachusetts) Retired Men's Club, founded in 1957, has decided to drop Retired from their title. According to this story, the social club with a membership of about 130, with ages ranging from the early 50's to the late 90's, is not a bunch of old guys sitting around eating doughnuts. Current members are more likely than not continue to work in some capacity and they are bringing boomer sensibility to the club. The club stays relevant by hosting high caliber speakers and helping with community causes like the local food bank. The club has also launched a webpage and is on Facebook.

It might be worth checking out similar organizations in your community to see if they also need a reboot.

Cheers,
Hello fellow Encore Hustlers

Mr EH loves to hear about additions to the lexicon relating senior entrepreneurs.

If you, like Mr EH, have never heard of "baby chasing", then read this story that explains the phenomena. It turns out that baby chasers are retired, or near retired, boomers who relocate to be near their grandchildren.

However, boomers being boomers are not content just being maw-maw and pop-pop. Instead, many baby chasers are opting the move to be an opportunity to pursue an encore hustle.

If you are considering being a baby chaser and moving to a new community then it would definitely worth your time to tap local resources to help support launching your new business. As an example, check out this link to the Asheville (North Carolina) chapter of SCORE, a nonprofit partner of the Small Business Administration that mentors aspiring entrepreneurs.

Hello fellow Encore Hustlers

Sometimes you need a shove or a kick in the pants to get your hustle started.

One way is to commit to giving yourself a 30 day deadline to launch. Read this story from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario about an upcoming seminar How to Launch Your Own Side Hustle, hosted by StartUP Sault. The goal of the seminar is provide you the tools to launch your business idea in a month.

For those of you who are not familiar with the Sault (pronounced Soo), it is a small city along the shore of Lake Superior and across from the Michigan Upper Peninsula and for much of the 20th century it was a major steel making center. The area has a rugged beauty, short summers and long, brutal winters. It was also, for a few years, the home of Mr EH in the 80's, when he was a research metallurgist at Algoma Steel.

Residents of the Soo tend to be a hardy and hard working bunch and Mr EH noted that many of his co-workers maintained side hustles including:

renting out a log splitter

stringing racquets

organizing golf tournaments

providing industrial safety training

raising tropical fish

It has been over 30 since Mr EH has lived in the Soo but it pleasant to hear that the entrepreneurial spirit lives on the city in such grass-root organizations as StartUp Sault, which is provides support and networking opportunities for new businesses.

The upcoming seminar is lead by Nevin Buconjic the founder of StartUp Sault and a serial entrepreneur in his own right. During the seminar Nevin will discuss his latest side business that he started in one week for less than $250.

If you cannot attend seminar you can also read his two books Starting Your Own Business:An Entrepreneur's Guide and 25 Money-Making Businesses You Can Start in Your Spare Time, both are available on Amazon.
Hello fellow Encore Hustlers

Consulting can be a very profitable second act for many encore hustlers. So why not cash in on your years of experience and expertise by pursing a consulting gig?

At one time when Mr EH was working for a consulting engineering group we found that, in many cases, it was difficult to compete against retired engineers who could undercut our hourly rates.

In most cases they could earn more than they did pre-retirement, and they could still beat our rate sheet.

After all, a second act consultant didn't have our office overhead, and didn't have to pay for benefits such as health insurance, vacation and 401k. Also, to find clients, they could tap into a rich networking pool of their former employers, customers, suppliers and industry committees.

If you are considering consulting, read this article from considerable.com. The article has good points about how how to prepare to be a consultant and how to get over the hurdle of negotiating your rates.

Also check out the website irelaunch.com which is dedicated providing resources to professionals returning to the workforce after retirement.
Hello fellow Encore Hustlers

When it comes to planning your encore hustle the "who" can be more important than the "what" according to this article from NextAvenue. The article features an interview with Rob Cross, a professor at Babson College (Wellesley, MA), who has studied social networks and the workplace.

Cross concludes that for many of us the most important aspect of work is the enjoyment we receive from the people we work with, rather than the type of work we do. Therefore when it comes to seek out an encore career we should spend some time reflecting on previous work experiences and seek to recreate the work experience that brought you the most meaning and fulfillment.

If you want to read more about Cross check out this article from the Harvard Business Review.
Encore hustling can be the pursuit of a dream career after retiring from a job that paid the bills for two or three decades.

Kaufman, formerly a teacher in New York City, retired after 25 years and enrolled in a Masters of Social Work program at Rutgers University (New Jersey), graduating at age 73. His cliental include adults, couples, children and adolescents and he provides individual and group sessions, including, in the case of a client, aged 104, in-home visits.
Hello fellow Encore Hustlers

Readers of this blog know that for a number of reasons, good and bad, pursuing encore hustles has become the new norm. Walk into any store, office or restaurant and the odds are on the side of seeing someone over 65 working there.

Read this great article from the Chicago Tribune that combines fascinating factoids from the US Bureau of Statistics, like the 165,000 seniors working in grocery stories, and thumbnail profiles, like the 70 year old who juggles two jobs, catering and bartending.
Hello fellow Encore Hustlers

There is a certain allure associated with the word freelance. It has roots with the medieval term for a knight for hire. Now it brings to mind mind thoughts of being independence and working for the highest bidder.

For those of us who are approaching, or are in retirement, the reality is much more mundane, according to this article from the New York Times. The article cites statistics sourced from the Freelancers Union indicating 30 percent of Americans over the age of 55 performed some sort of freelance work in 2018, with freelancing being defined as any sort of independently contracted work, running the gamut from driving for Uber to being a consultant.

For many of that cohort of senior freelancers the extra money covers daily expenses or bolsters retirement saving. However, for some, the decision to freelance is forced upon them by late career layoffs and the inability to find full time employment of equal pay and caliber.

If you fall into that category, or have already retired and are planning to return to work, via the freelance route, then the best course would be to put serious planning before you launch the website or print the business cards.

As a good start, Mr. EH recommends heading over to AARP's Work for Yourself at 55+ and download their toolkit with plenty of information on how to brainstorm, build a business plan, avoid common mistakes, plan for taxes and reach out for support and mentorship.

After all, freelance medieval knights didn't rush into battle without a strategy and a sharp sword. It's better to be Ivanhoe than Don Quixote.

Cheers,
Hello fellow Encore Hustlers

Supporting the Seattle Seahawks is a bit of religion in the state of Washington. And I am not joking since I have a seen a Catholic priest wearing the trademark blue and green under his vestments during Mass on game day Sunday.

If you are fan of the S'Hawks then why not check out this story about the partnering of CenturyLink Field (home of the Seahawks) and AARP to hire seniors to work part-time (30 hours a month max) at the stadium on game days. There are hundreds of positions available, including ushers, security, catering servers, concession cashiers, cooks and suite managers. CenturyLink is focusing on hiring older workers because of their experience, dedication and passion they bring to the job.

And if being a Seahawk fan if not your cup of tea then how about working at a FC Sounders game, who also play at CenturyLink, or at a Morrissey concert at the adjacent WAMU Theatre. They all need event workers.

Go to this link for the upcoming September 25th job fair at CenturyLink.
Go S'Hawks!!
Hello fellow Encore Hustlers

Most of us think we can tell a joke and are just naturally funny. Well its one thing to get a laugh out of friends and coworkers but its another to stand up in front of a crowd of strangers and try out your material. Especially when speaking in speaking in public is identified as one our greatest fears.

So imagine what it must be like to decide to take up standup comedy at age 65. Read this story about Marty Ross, who did that after working 47 years in Manhattan's clothing industry, and has been making making a name for himself as the Wrinkled Rebel on the comedy club circuit. Also check out his AARP produced video on YouTube Date My Grandpa.

Hello fellow Encore Hustlers.

Thanks to the internet there are thousands of opportunities to work from home (or remotely from any location). It is win-win situation for both employers and employees.

For the employer a remote employee eliminates the need to have maintain costly office space and provides a workforce with flexible schedules that are especially needed for customer service positions.

For the employee a work from home job means you can kiss the commute goodbye and allows you to use geographical arbitrage to live in a low cost of living region that may not have the best paying opportunities.

The prerequisites to pursuing these positions may include:

good internet connectivity

Windows/Mac PC or laptop

dedicated phone line

telephone headset

webcam

printer

If this seems like a big investment the good news is that many companies will supply the hardware or will provide an allowance. Also many companies may subsidize yourdedicated telephone/internet monthly fees.

Check out this link from singlemomsincome.com that features several companies that are not only hiring for work-from-home positions but also offer benefits, such as 401k's and medical insurance. The list includes:

Apple at Home

Carnival Cruises

American Express

Hertz

Mr EH especially likes the benefit package for Carnival, that in addition to a matching 401k, includes tow complementary cruises a year and discounts for friends and family.

Cheers,
Hello fellow Encore Hustlers

Making money through passive income is a great encore hustle. In past posts I have highlighted apps and websites that match you with people who are willing to pay to use your RV, boat, pool, garage.

Now check out this story about Neighbor.com who wants to be the Airbnb of storage. Their site allows you to list your basement, garage, RV pad or backyard shed and they will match you with people how are looking for temporary or long term storage of personnel/business items, cars, boats and RVs.

Neighbor.com also handles payment, customer vetting and insurance so the only thing you have to do is clear out your basement or shed and collect some extra cash for SOPS (storing other peoples stuff).

Cheers,
Hello fellow Encore Hustlers

Mr EH has been a lifelong lover of public libraries. One of his fondest childhood memories is being allowed to apply for an adult library card while still in elementary school. Libraries continue to be a great resource and not just as a place for books, DVDs and periodicals. Today libraries offer a multitude of programs for the community and can be the place to kick off your encore career.

Check out this story about the Arlington (Virginia) County Library System and their hosting, throughout September, of a series of programs for retirees, that includes workshops on helping seniors find their encore hustle. The program is a joint venture between the library and the Arlington Employment Center, and the Alexandria/Arlington Regional Workforce Council.

The programs include job counseling, using social media for job hunting and resume writing. The program also has a +50 job fair to match seniors with employers.

Check out your nearby library and see if similar programs are being offered. If they don't, ask why not?

Cheers,

Hello fellow Encore Hustlers

Do you love dogs? Do you have a fenced in yard? Would you be willing to let share that yard with apartment bound canines that need space to run and play, and make a few bucks at the same time?

Check Sniffspot, a new app that connects you with pet owners who are seeking a safe and private place for their fur babies.

Mr HH did a quick check of Seattle area and found 13 listings with rates ranging from $4 to $10 per hour. Not a bad rate for a passive encore hustle.

If Mr EH had a tail it would be wagging.

Cheers,
Mr EH
